These sub plans for teachers have saved my sanity on more than one occasion. I remember the year our principal asked us to prepare emergency lesson plans before school even started. Ugh, why? I’m usually a pretty proactive person, but not when it came to sub plans. I was never sick. And I was never out.
But then I had kids of my own. And THEY got sick. And THEY were out.
Scrambling to write sub plans at 5:30 in the morning while you’re holding your daughter’s hair back during her third trip to the bathroom will change your mind quickly.
So, fine. Lesson learned. Emergency sub plans it is.
LIFE LESSONS
I soon realized that I often needed sub plans for multiple days. I don’t know about you, but my children were rarely better after just one day at home, despite all my efforts toward a speedy recovery.
The following school year, I went ahead and wrote FIVE full days of emergency sub plans, just in case.
Take that, pink eye!
SUB PLANS FOR TEACHERS
If you need to put some EMERGENCY SUB PLANS together, take a look at these. They’re easy to assemble and last for years. In fact, I usually asked a parent volunteer to do this for me during our first teacher work week.
Once your sub plans are organized, all you have to do to maintain them is replace any worksheets and supplies that were used.
The plans can either be used individually or for consecutive days. It really just depends on your personal needs. Knowing that you’re going to be out is different than the unexpected moments that catch us off guard. When we know we’re going to be out, we can be thoughtful about planning for a substitute and write plans that keep our students on track. But I think we can aim for quality instruction even with our emergency sub plans.
I wrote these lesson plans to reflect first grade standards in reading, writing, math, and science. So, even if the timing of your emergency isn’t totally ideal, you’ll know your students aren’t being subjected to a full day of fluff.
Not that fluff isn’t fun, but you know.
These sub plans include standards-based lessons and activities for all subject areas in first grade. Check out some samples below.👇 BONUS: You can use these templates and games throughout the year, too!
