Who doesn’t love a few fun jokes about turkeys this time of year? Ok… you and I maybe, but kids don’t really get tired of silly jokes. As far as they’re concerned, the cornier the better.
I figure if I’m going to hear them anyway, I might as well print them so they can read them. Jokes require a definite sense of timing, expression, and smoothness for the perfect delivery, so they’re just right for practicing fluency.
If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em… right?
TURKEY JOKES FOR KIDS
This SILLY TURKEY JOKE BOOK is perfect for readers in first and second grades. It features six kid-friendly, completely corny jokes about turkeys. The level of word difficulty isn’t challenging, and the text length is short, so the kids don’t fight the repeated readings for fluency. In fact, they choose to read their book often so they can memorize the jokes to torture (I mean entertain) their loved ones during Thanksgiving dinner.
I hope you know I’m kidding.
Mostly.😊
My favorite part of this joke book is the interactive design. As the children are reading and learning the jokes, they’re invited to illustrate each page in any way that makes sense to them. It’s a joke book, so there’s no real right way to do this. The sky’s pretty much the limit as far as their drawings go.
Instructionally, jokes rely on word play. Some kids, particularly ELLs and children with developing language skills, may need you to explain why the joke is funny. For example, the joke pictured above requires that a child knows (1) a cobbler is a type of dessert, (2) that turkeys make a gobbling sound, and (3) that’s why gobbler is a funny replacement for cobbler.
We’re not professional comedians here, so the jokes in this book are nice. Here’s a sampling:
- Which side of the turkey has the most feathers?
- The outside!
- Can a turkey jump higher than a building?
- Of course it can! Buildings can’t jump!
- What type of key can’t open doors?
- A tur-key!
- What sound does a turkey’s phone make?
- Wing, wing, wing!
What could be better than the jokes shared above? Yep… wait until you hear the jokes your children come up with on their own! They think they’re hilarious and that’s pretty cute!
You can preview each page in the resource by clicking through the image below.👇 I’ve shared each page in the preview and included all six jokes in the description so you can see if it’s right for you and your students.
