Did you know April 12th is National Grilled Cheese Day? Neither did we, but we do now. For the last few years, we’ve been in the habit of browsing through the National Day Calendar to see all the quirky days it lists. If you’re familiar with the calendar, you know there are a lot of silly, but fun days. Many center around food… jellybeans, pizza, pickles, and so on.
This year, we noticed April features National Grilled Cheese Day. Being cheese lovers, I’m not sure how we missed this one. Cheese is a word I don’t often overlook.

So now we’re planning for it. One way we’re going to make connections with our standards is to make grilled cheese sandwiches together and then work on writing how-to books afterward. Not only will the activity give us an opportunity to demonstrate a little math and science, but it will also provide a way for kids to develop their procedural writing skills.

A LITTLE SOMETHING FROM MY KITCHEN
Also, I can’t remember where I got this recipe from, but it was during a time that I was a tiny bit obsessed about trying different variations of grilled cheese sandwiches.
It’s made with blackberry preserves, bacon, jalapeños, and havarti cheese on slices of sourdough bread. If the combination sounds weird, just trust me… it’s worth giving it a shot!

ANOTHER WRITING RESOURCE
Procedural writing, or how-to writing, is one of our favorite writing units. The kids LOVE being experts about their particular topic. When you’re ready to plan your instruction for that genre, take a look at this post for primary teachers. It’s full of resources that are just right for developing writers!
Until next time, happy teaching!
