Welcome back to school! Every year, my students have a lot of questions about the people who work in our school. This is especially true for incoming kindergarteners and kids who are new to our school.
They want to know:
- Who is the principal?
- What does a custodian do?
- Does our coach like to play basketball?
Children spend a lot of time at school so it should feel comfortable and familiar … like a family or a home away from home. Meeting all the people who work in the school and understanding what they do is an important part of this process.
We need to demystify the people who work in the front office, learn the names of the support staff, and value the contributions each adult makes to the overall health of the school’s culture. Everyone’s job is significant and everyone plays a part in the success of the community.
Schedule Mini Interviews
The first week of school is a really busy time for everyone, but if I can get a few staff members to come in for a quick Q & A, it makes a big difference for my kids. We prepare for the interviews by brainstorming our questions first. I want to honor the children’s curiosities, but it’s also important to teach them interview etiquette. Modeling what is too private or too personal is important to do before your guest arrives.
Trust me.😂
Welcome Back to School: School Posters
These posters can be used throughout the year for a variety of purposes, but I like to begin the year with them. The information on each poster communicates what we believe about value about our school team members. Each has a heart for kids. And each is someone we can’t do without. In this bundled set of SCHOOL POSTERS: WHO WORKS IN OUR SCHOOL?, I’ve included a poster for 15 different roles:
- principal
- assistant principal
- coach
- counselor
- school chef
- secretary
- nurse
- custodian
- librarian
- music teacher
- art teacher
- tech teacher
- classroom teacher
- teacher aide
- volunteer
You can pick up the poster set HERE. Blank copies have also been included so you can brainstorm your own text for the posters, and additional ideas for using the posters can be found in the download.
