Write the Room Holiday Activities for K-1

Our students have been doing some version of write the room activities since I started teaching. It worked then and it works now. Any opportunity to get them up and out of their seats is a win. And this is one of those activities.

If the write the room activity is new to you or your kids, it’s simple:

  • post key word cards around the classroom
  • give the children their own recording sheet with the corresponding images
  • challenge them to find the cards and write the key words on their own sheet

Easy, right? So easy, in fact, we recently decided to up the ante a bit. We like the simple sets for most of our kindergarten friends, but our first graders were ready for a challenge. So, we differentiated our write the room sets in a few ways.

First, we added a card set with missing letters. Now, as our first graders circulate and find words, they have to determine which sound is in question and determine the letter that makes that sound. They love this new piece and feel like they’re solving a mystery at each word card.

We also thought, “Let’s do something with all those key words the kids just collected.” Now, our updated write the room sets include a variety of worksheets to help children improve skills connected to:

  • phonics and phonemic awareness
  • word study
  • reading comprehension
  • creative writing

WRITE THE ROOM HOLIDAY SETS

If your students also love write the room activities, but you’ve been looking for a way to extend the lesson, check out these options. They’re great for first graders or for kindergarten children who are ready for a little extra instructional push.

  • Halloween Set
  • Thanksgiving Set
  • Christmas Set
  • St. Patrick’s Day Set

As we get the other holiday sets updated, we’ll add those. I’m even thinking of making sets that reflect science vocabulary. Our kids really love our science studies, and this activity would be a fun and familiar way for them to learn key words for each of those units.

Stay tuned.
