Snow from a baby diaper? With a little imagination, yes. You can purchase snow-making products online, but they’re costly and you have to wait for them to be delivered, so why not make your own? It’s a really fun holiday science investigation and you only need a few things to make it happen!
- a baby diaper
- scissors
- water
- baby powder (optional)
The children have so much fun cutting apart the baby diaper and discovering the sandy substance inside. But when they add water to the substance, it absorbs the liquid, wicks away the water, and feels cool and fluffy. They go nuts over this part! Add a little baby powder, if you like, and poof! Snow!
This science lesson is included in the teaching resource SANTA SCIENCE, along with four other Santa-themed science activities:
- Which of Santa’s cookies will float the longest in milk?
- Can you use your sense of smell to figure out what is hiding in Santa’s chimneys?
- What is stuffed inside each Christmas stocking?
- Can you and your teammates plan and build a structure strong enough to withstand a North Pole blizzard?
Each science activity is standards based, helping children learn or review concepts such as:
- absorption
- the changing states of matter
- sinking and floating
- our five senses (smell and touch)
- the engineering process
They’re a really fun way to integrate some smart holiday fun into your lesson plans the week before winter break!
